I had this cedar slab and a pattern concept I have been itching to execute. A great bird winging towards a mirrored lake with sunset and clouds. The smooth top of the board was a natural for the endless sky and the bump-out worked for the bird coming into the scene. I cut the pattern and to my despair, one could not the image with all of the motion and color of the cedar. I traced the cut work (multiple times) with a larger blade to bring the image out.
Some may say I created “a silk purse from a sows ear.” But I believe I was “trying to get whiskey from a bottle of wine.” I am glad I found a way to make the image work but it brings to mind again: Patient! Work with the beauty I find and do not try to impose my will upon the wood. Fortunately, it is a nice piece.

This cutting is an image from D. Kihl. I have full permission to duplicate it.

This image is cut from 15/16 inch cedar board backed with a dyed ply.
