This image is cut from a 1/4 inch board with paper below it.
I was out walking and I spotted a house with decorative windows. The tops were a stylized candle flame. I snapped the image with my phone and started ruminating.
I thought about the Russian Orthodoxic wooden churches I saw in a California state park with onion domes of wood. I looked up the patron saint of candlemakers and knew I needed a icon. I open the front door to show the welcoming nature.
Finally, I challenged myself to wow my scroll saw buddies. Cutwork leaving long thin bits of wood is incredibly difficult. First, hand cutting straight lines is tough. Then if one leaves only a whisper of wood in the image, disaster is always moments away. I gave my church four windows: narrow with three three stacked windows in each.
As with all my work, I used my scroll saw in the construction of the art, no computer guided tools.
This cutting is based on my own design.
