I had a request for a piece with a deer in it. There are lots of deer patterns out there to satisfy all taste from naturalist, spiritualist, hunters, to goofy images for the young at heart. We browsed one of my favorite designers, Steve Good, and picked a pattern.
One of the things I have learned over the years is: it is best to use to standard frame sizes. So I pushed and pulled the pattern to fit a 12 inch square frame… No big deal. It was only after I put the wood in the frame that I realized the pattern was designed as self framing.
I looked at the piece in the frame and thought: “Well, that’s a lovey mat around the image.” (That’s my story and I am sticking to it!)
