Dear All,
About 5 years ago, I decided to elevate my scroll saw work to art. With that personal challenge came much smaller margins for error.
I was working on a Kenny Hopkins pattern called “Wolf Maiden”. I like the pattern but changed the face of the young woman. As I was working on the saw, it seemed to me the nose was not quite right. Now one of the big rules of wood working is it is a lot easier to remove wood than add it back in… My solution was to take a picture of the face, go to my PC and try different solutions of ‘removing wood’ from the image. After trying several tweaks, the solution I executed was to add more shadow to the left of the left nostril and the right side of the bridge. While I was in there, I smoothed the orbit of the right eye.(See the attached before and after image.) Although the face is only 1 1/2 x 1 inches on the board, getting it right was central to the success of the piece.
I call this image “The Huntress” and it can be found under “Flat Art” and then “Mythological” on my website.
Stay save, Stay well
Love to All,
Paul
